What is a disinfectant wipe?

 

“Disinfectant wipe” is a broader term. A disinfectant wipe may contain alcohol, but other disinfectant chemistries can also be used.
 

Its purpose is to reduce or inactivate specified microorganisms in accordance with the product's intended use, validated efficacy data and instructions for use.

When might another disinfectant wipe be more appropriate?

Does an alcohol wipe clean as well as disinfect?


Cleaning and disinfection are separate processes.

Is a higher percentage of alcohol always better?


No. A higher alcohol percentage should not automatically be assumed to provide better disinfection.
 

Healthcare organisations should use validated commercial products according to their supplied concentration, intended use, efficacy claims and instructions for use rather than selecting a product simply because it contains a higher percentage of alcohol.

 

Are alcohol wipes and sterile alcohol wipes the same?


No. A standard alcohol wipe may be supplied non-sterile, while a sterile alcohol wipe has itself been supplied in a sterile condition.
 

Sterile alcohol wipes may also be supplied in multiple packaging layers to support controlled transfer into cleanroom or aseptic environments.
 

Importantly, the word “sterile” refers to the condition of the wipe itself. It does not mean that wiping a surface with 70% IPA will sterilise that surface.

 

What does contact time mean?


Contact time is the period for which the disinfectant must remain in contact with the surface to meet a particular validated efficacy claim.
 

Contact times can vary by product and microorganism. Vernacare publishes organism-specific efficacy data and contact times for its Azo® Alcohol range.
 

Users should follow the current manufacturer instructions rather than applying one generic contact time to every disinfectant wipe.

 



What should healthcare procurement teams compare?

 

Comparing wipes only by price per tub can overlook important practical and clinical differences.
 

Useful points to compare include:
 

  • Intended use – what surfaces or equipment is the product designed for?
  • Active chemistry – alcohol based or another formulation?
  • Validated efficacy – which microorganisms and test standards are covered?
